Pozzallo
Pozzallo
Pozzallo has come a long way since it was a little fishing village. Under the Normans and the Spaniards it was a major port for the export of grain for the County of Modica, and its symbol remains the 15th century Torre Cabrera which guards the beach.
For 9 consecutive years the beaches at Pozzallo (and Santa Maria del Focallo) have received the Blue Riband for their cleanliness.
Winters in Pozzallo are very short, the temperature rarely drops below 10 degrees centigrade and the busy little town has a year round population of about 20,000, though in summer it can triple. In high summer Pozzallo doesn’t sleep, the area round the Torre is alive all night long with bars and clubs, and people come from as far away as Catania for a night out on the beach.
The port at Pozzallo has become the main port for Malta, the distance between Valetta and Sicily is covered in 90 minutes by the catamarans of Virtu Ferries which operate a daily service for most of the year.
The high spots of the Pozzallo year are:
St John Baptist: 24 June - which sees a procession to the sea, and the statue is taken round the bay on a boat.
Holy Week in Pozzallo is celebrated with a Via Crucis, Palm Sunday and Good Friday events, as well as the procession on Easter Sunday itself.
In the summer there is a fish festival during the week of Ferragosto (15 August), an ice cream festival, and a sagra of the Sicilian cannolo.
After Pachino, Pozzallo is the sunniest of all Italian comunes!
